AN ANALYSIS OF DERIVATIONAL AND INFLECTIONAL MORPHEMES IN TAYLOR SWIFT’S SONGS ON “MIDNIGHTS” ALBUM

Abstrak

This study aims to analyze the derivation and inflection of morphemes in Taylor Swift’s song lyrics in the album “Midnights”. This study uses a qualitative method. The data sources in this study are song lyrics from the six selected Taylor Swift’s song lyrics on “Midnights” album the data was obtained from official online websites for song lyrics. The researcher uses morphology theory by Francis Katamba. Every word in the song lyrics that contained derivational and inflectional morphemes will be marked for the analysis and and from the results of the analysis data that have been obtained by the researcher will be presented in table form. Based on the results of the analysis of the six songs, the researcher found sixty-four data, including twenty-six cases of word formation with derivational morphemes in the form of prefixes dis-, im-, un- and suffixes -ly, -ful, -ism, -ion, -ive, -able, -less, -ies, -y, -al. In addition, the researcher also found thirty-eight cases of word formation with inflectional morphemes in the form of suffixes -s, -‘s, -ing, -ed, -er and -est. Based on these data, it was found that the number of inflectional morphemes was the most in Taylor Swift’s song lyrics in the “Midnights” album compared to the number of derivational morphemes.Key words : Derivation, Inflection, Lyrics,  Morphemes, Word
